Where are ADA Compliant Signs required?

 

  • ADA Signs are required when the purpose is to designate a permanent space in a building. Meaning that ADA signage should be installed at all spaces that will maintain the same function for more than 7 days.
  • ADA Signs are required when an area of the building pertains to safety. For example, next to elevators, fire exits, and stairways.

 

Where are ADA Compliant Signs not required?

 

  • ADA Signs are not required when rooms will be in use for 7 days or less. Meaning that they are not necessary for identifying a temporary space in a building or an event.
  • ADA Signs are not required in areas that are not meant for public use, for example a home office.
  • ADA Signs are not required outside of the building where a business name or address is provided, for example a monument sign or address number.

It’s important to not that the size of the building doesn’t matter. The only exceptions include prisons, religious institutions and buildings eligible for the National Register of Historic Places
